COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

CLOSER, DOOR

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in lieu of Federal Specification FF-H-121.

This commercial item description covers mechanical devices for automatically closing and controlling hinged or pivoted doors by means of metal springs and liquid or air controlled checks.

Salient characteristics:

Design. Product design shall conform to the requirements of ANSI/BHMA A156.4 American National Standard for Door Controls- Closers. All dimensions and threads shall be in US units and all surfaces intended for mating accessories or attachments shall dimensioned to be compatible with standard domestically (US) dimensioned components.

Type and grade. Type and grade shall be in accordance with the identifying type numbers shown in ANSI/BHMA A156.4 as specified.

Sizes. Size shall be in accordance with Table A1 of Appendix A of ANSI/BHMA for the applicable type of closer, as specified. The term “size” relates to the closer’s capacity to control various door widths and is measured in terms of closing force when tested.

Hand. Door closers shall be designed for right hand or left hand operation or reversible as specified.

Options. When specified, closers shall incorporate optional features PT 4A, PT 4B, PT 4C, PR 4D, PT 4E, PT 4F, PT 4G, and PT 4H, PT 8A, PT 8B, PT 8C, PT 8D, PT 8E, PT 8F, PT 8G, PT 8H, PT 8J and PT 8K. When conflicting or incompatible optional features are specified, it shall be the supplier’s responsibility to obtain clarification from the contracting officer.

Plunger access. Certain door closers such as tubular pneumatic closers are sometimes designed so that one end of the tube will permit access to the plunger for servicing, this feature is not required unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order.
