COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LOCK SET, RIM
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference of Federal Specification FF-H-1819.
This description covers rim type lock acts for residential and industrial applications.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be in accordance with the requirements of ANSI A156.5.
Shall be of the types and grades described in Appendix A-8 of ANSI A156.5, as specified.
Unless otherwise specified, lock fronts of face plates shall be flat.
Armored fronts with base plates of steel or bronze shall be provided in lieu of solid fronts on locks when specified.
Regular level strikes shall be furnished unless otherwise specified.
Cylinder cases of locks shall be removable, when specified.
Finish shall be in accordance with BHMA 1301, as specified.
Two (2) keys shall be furnished with each lock set. Keys shall be of brass or aluminum, as specified. When specified, a group of locks shall be master keyed and shall be provided with three (3) master keys per group.
Lock sets shall consist of lock, trim, strikeplate, keys and other compatible hardware necessary for proper application.
The issues of ANSI A156.5 and BHMA 1301 in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Workmanship. Locks shall be free from imperfections and defects which affect appearance, durability, and serviceability. All finished parts of hardware that are set to be flush shall have accurately machined, true edges. Edges of unfinished steel and iron and unpolished work need not be machine finished, but shall be smooth and reasonably true.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.

BHMA standards are available from the Builders Hardware Manufacturer’s Association, 60 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017.
